Pippi Longstocking is a character in a famous children's series. In the
first book of the series Pippi has faith that her father, who had
fallen overboard, had managed to survive and become the king of the
cannibals on an island.
(But not cannibals that eat people!)
In a later book she meets up with him.

The Grape Ape is also a character from a children's book. I think he's
a purple monkey/alien. He's not at all fat though, so it probably
wasn't another Hurley fat joke. He may have meant Jack. I don't know
enough about the Grape Ape to know if or how it might be appropriate
though. Maybe neither does Sawyer, although his knowledge of kiddie
lit has probably improved since he's been on the island.

<Begin quote> The Great Grape Ape was a Saturday morning cartoon
produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions that was broadcast on ABC from
1975 to 1978. The titular character is a 40 foot tall gorilla (voiced
by the late Bob Holt) who loves grapes...so much, he goes bananas! His
catchphrase is repeating his name twice ("Grape Ape, Grape Ape") after
anything anyone says, usually as a form of agreement or acknowledgement
of what was said. He travels the countryside with his canine pal
(voiced by Marty Ingels), Beegle Beagle (whom he calls "Beegley
Beagley"). Grape Ape's immense size tends to initially shock and
frighten those unfamiliar with him, and his presence alone has often
terrified people, animals, and even a road sign once, causing them to
run off screaming something along the lines of: "YIKES! It's a giant
gorill-ill-ill-ill-la!" </End quote>
"Luckily being a 40 foot purple ape means there aren't too many
problems you just can't sit on."

So I think he was referring to Hurley. I'm too old to be familiar with
the Grape Ape. Whatever happened to Magilla?

Yep, that does sound like another Hurley reference. Didn't take Sawyer
long to get back to name calling, did it? Well, at least he's not
doing it to the guy's face.

Sawyer says:

Yeah, well, "him" (meaning himself) says though Pippi Longstreet and
that damn Grape Ape are ideal candidates for the dirty dozen I am just
going to say you might want to bring the Red Beret.
===========

He means Jack and Kate are cartoon character tough guys compared to a
real Republican Guard war veteran.

I don't think Jack can properly be described as a giant gorilla. He
was referring to Hurley.

Sorry, I was thinking of a different newgroup (MST3K's). They always got the
two confused.

I think the character was originally on a packet of drink mix. I put
that in the discussion page in the hope someone else will recall with
definitive info.
