When Claire drank from Ethan's canteen, she said the water was really
sour. Ethan said he didn't notice.

Anyone want to speculate on this? I have no clue.

You noticed that he only sniffed at the water, he didn't drink it.

RWG (obviously, it was supposed to be the tainted water that kept her
drugged up)

Yes. I'm guessing "sour" is Strine for "bitter". And wasn't that
great acting? She had to play someone in a stuporous state, but still
make it interesting for us, so some unrealism was necessary. She
played "high" very nicely.

Meanwhile, Libby's lines must've been an embarrassment to clinical
psychologists. How was that NOT amnesia? Amnesia is any abnormal lack
of memory, regardless of cause.

Last season after Claire's return John asked me how such an amnesia
could've been produced. I said the subject could've been kept
stuporous with a drug, causing anterograde amnesia for that period.
However, some slack-cutting is necessary, but OK for TV (practically a
cliche), because anterograde amnesia is generally regarded as not
recoverable. Retrograde amnesia is OTOH frequently uncoverable.

Good guess - Australia's summer is our winter, so their "sour" is
probably our "bitter." And they drive on driveways, and park on
parkways.

Hmm, now that I think about it, the canteen was probably just filled
with lemonade.

Versed liquid or any benzodiazapine will taste sour in a drink if enough
is placed there. Versed has amnesiac effects.

Anything stuporous state (whether produced by a drug -- any number of
"downers" can do it -- or otherwise) will be accompanied by anterograde
amnesia. The memories just don't get laid down. Of course that means
they can't be recovered, because they're not there. So Claire's
memories may be confabulated in part or whole, as well as affected by
Libby's suggestion.

Who said it was water?

I assumed it was tainted to keep her drugged.

Agreed, I thought this was rather obvious. Whatever was in the canteen
was drugged, and Claire was staggering around in happy land. Ethan's
deliberate avoidance of drinking it would support that.

OK, you guys are probably right. But it really doesn't make continuity
sense:

1. If they had been drugging Claire with that "sour water" the whole
time, why would Claire suddenly complain about it like she had never
tasted it before? You think she would have said, "geez, why is water
always so sour here?"

2. Why would Ethan need to trick Claire into drinking this nasty water
when he was giving her daily direct injections?

I'm pretty sure the injections were inert. There is no disease, and no
vaccine for "it".

In the bunker, they probably were giving Claire periodic sedatives via
injection. But when Ethan took her outside, it was safer and easier to
just give her a booster in the drinking water. Why carry around one of
those injectors if you don't need to?

Then why not just give her the tainted water or whatever it was in the first
place?

Because 1. she was probably comming down from the effects and her taste buds
were returning to normal and 2. I don't think 'hey you look thirsty, how
about I inject you with this needle out in the open' would have gone over
too well.

Yes, but why did he take her out at all? Remember he said the others (the
other Others) wouldn't be too happy with him?
I thought the sour drink might have been an antidote to the drug, for some
reason - possibly so that she could really take in what he was saying about
the "good" family.
